IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF "NICE" GUIDANCE ON THE MANAGEMENT OF THYROID CANCERS

The implementation of the changes recommended in the NICE report on head and neck cancers is proceeding apace with CANCER NETWORKS expected to submit their implementation proposals by the  end of  October.

Do you know what your network is proposing ?

Do you know how it will affect you and your hospital's patients?

Were you consulted?

Do you agree with the plans?

There are suggestions from around the country that the individual networks are sometimes making plans that are at variance with the recommendations. If you wish to challenge the plans you need to know what those recommendations were. You can find them at  www.cquins.nhs.uk/2/manual.php and click on "head and neck measures". It's a big document but it makes clear that:

  • Thyroid MDMs can be separate from Head and Neck ones

  • Entry can be via Thyroid clinics not just Neck Lump clinics

  • Only "complex" cancer surgery needs to be done at the nominated network centre. The definition of "complex" needs to be agreed locally.

If you are in conflict with the proposals you should try to resolve that locally, if necessary by contacting the Medical Director of the Cancer Network. If you have to do that please inform Mark Lansdown  or Zyg Krukowski so that the BAES can monitor difficulties nationally.
